When the victim seems perfect, is it the perfect crime? The gripping new serial killer thriller, from the runaway bestselling author of CRY BABY.
On a snowy December evening, Mary Cowper is walking her dog through the churchyard of Liverpool Cathedral - and that's when the killer strikes.
Put on the case, DS Nathan Cody is quickly stumped. Wherever he digs, Mary seems to be almost angelic - no-one has a bad word to say about her, let alone a motive for such a violent murder.
And Cody has other things on his mind too. The ghosts of his past are coming ever close, and - still bearing the physical and mental scars - it's all he can do to hold onto his sanity.
And then the killer strikes again . . .
A woman is killed in the churchyard while walking her dog. The only witness is her little furry friend. Mary Cowper is considered a living saint, a woman who has devoted her life teaching children. Who would want her dead?
But when another woman is killed in another churchyard, the detective in charge of the case starts to consider a serial killer. There is a certain pattern in the killings. And while the first victim is a saint, the second one is a prostitute, a sinner.
What do the two women have in common? They are both women, killed in a church, and the similarity ends here. Or it seems like.
Then, there is a third murder…In a third church….
DS Nathan Cody works on the case. He still has the nightmares from the previous case, when he was torched and almost died. This is the second book in the series and I have no knowledge of what has happened in the previous book. But it is obvious that the previous events had left marks on his body and his mind. And history repeats all over again. Small things make his mind go crazy. He hears things, he sees things that aren’t there. Or maybe they are there? He has a killer to catch and demons to chase. And a relationship to repair.
I must say I enjoyed this book. It is my first from this author but won’t be the last. I liked the main character, I liked his personality and the adding of his personal life to the story. Not starting from the first book didn’t stop me from enjoying the story at all. The plot was grippy, captivating and full of twists. I enjoyed every single page. Perfect for thriller fans like me. Totally recommended!
